The high price of ROADWORKS

It is an age-old maxim: a good journey takes time. Because travelling slowly allows you to really take in your surroundings. Sometimes, through no choice of our own, roadworks bring home the concept of slow travel. In my part of the world this has been the case for the past few years.

I moved to the platteland last year, after growing tired of the rush and din of the city. Here in Montagu in the Western Cape it takes me two minutes to get to work from my house – by bicycle. The town has an extraordinary appeal; I think this is thanks to its location, the mountains, the well-preserved heritage houses and the rural character that you find even in the town itself.
