The balmy, friendly south
When you say you’re off to Mozambique, friends and family usually give dire warnings about cyclones, rebels, floods, malaria and corruption. They’re right, of course: you need to prepare for these risks, but in the south, there’s far less to worry about.
The cyclones mostly occur in the north (where the rebels live); there have been no major floods in the south since the year 2000; and the fight against malaria is progressing well. But do check out the weather report before you travel to Mozambique, just in case. And while many South Africans who regularly holiday here say they don’t bother with prophylactics, we strongly encourage you to take your anti-malaria meds – especially kids, regardless of the season.
As far as corruption goes, we can honestly say that we did not experience any issues with the authorities on this recent visit to Mozambique. They were always friendly and professional – all the policemen could speak English and they would playfully reprimand you if you didn’t memorise at least a few Portuguese phrases.
All the South Africans we spoke to in the resorts agree that Mozambique is safe and friendly. So, load up your bakkie, hitch your caravan and head east.
