Along with air, fuel is the one thing an engine really needs. An engine will run (albeit not for long), without oil, but it simply cannot function without fuel.

Fuel, when mixed with air, then compressed and ignited, is what gives an engine its energy. So you can see it’s a fairly crucial ingredient, and when you start looking at exotic stuff like E85 ethanol, methanol, and nitromethane, it’s clear there are many more types of fuel than just the regular petrol and diesel varieties you see at your local petrol station. And even these have many different variations when you start looking closely at them. So, let’s find out what’s what when it comes to fuel.

Choice at the pumps might be limited to a couple of variants of petrol and one or two diesel blends, but venture away from the local filling station and there’s a much wider variety – from specialist road mixes, to hardcore race fuels.
