THE MK1: SPEEDO SWAP
Fitting a more accurate mph speedometer to our Mazda Eunos has taken the stress out of flashing past Gatso roadside cameras

As we’ve already reported in previous episodes, our bright blue MkI MX-5 is a ‘grey’ imported Eunos, and when it came into the country one of the conversions that had to be completed to make the car road legal over here was to swap the km/h speedometer for one calibrated to read in miles per hour. For some reason, the importer managed to scrimp on a few quid by retaining the original speedo and only replacing the dial with a nasty looking aftermarket MPH affair.
This lash-up provided an inaccurate reading, so we decided to investigate how to remove the Mazda’s instrument binnacle and do the job properly. A phone call to MX-5 breakers PM Sports Cars Ltd (01332 854760) located on the outskirts of Derby confirmed they had a suitable speedo in stock, and as the fixings on our binnacle were all broken, I also ordered a replacement used cover. Rather than have the parts couriered, it seemed a good idea to drive down to PM’s canal side warehouse, as they are only a few miles from where I live in the Peak District.
