A CAVALIER ATTITUDE
I did an apprenticeship at Vauxhall, starting at Dixons in Hull when I was 16. This would have been in 1996, so I grew up working on cars like the Cavalier. A four-door family saloon may not have been an obvious choice for a 16-year old, but the GSi was a pretty sporting option in its day and it was my dream car. Of course, on an apprentice’s wages I couldn't afford one, all I could get was a Metro. Unfortunately the Metro I bought turned out to be totally rotten – don’t forget that I was an apprentice so I was still learning!
Anyway, I got the Metro welded up and ran it for a while, then moved on to a Sierra. And yes, I was still at the Vauxhall dealer so you can imagine how well that went down with my boss. Fortunately everybody parked on the road back then, so it was well away from the forecourt. The Sierra only lasted for six months because it was rotten as well, so there is a bit of a theme developing here...
