Welcome to the latest instalment in my long-running series on tapping. Over the course of this series we’ve covered two-handed tapping from the basics up to some fairly complex material, investigated linear tapping in considerable depth, and, for the last three issues, looked into sweep picking. Phew!

In this month’s column we’re going to begin looking at ways in which we can combine the tapping technique with other playing styles such as slap bass, strumming, and the use of harmonics.

Tapping and Artificial Harmonics

The tapping technique can be used to play artificial harmonics quite easily. This is done by fretting a note, then tapping the same string with the picking hand at a point exactly an octave higher.
