THEORY OF THE MONTH

The Altered Dominant scale, also known as the Diminished Whole Tone scale, is a widely-used sonority in jazz improvisation which has a unique ‘outness’ to its sound when applied over b 5, in jazz it is commonplace over any dominant 7th chord that resolves up a fourth or down a fifth. With this in mind, the Altered Dominant scale proves to be a versatile tool in your improvisational arsenal.
