Travelling Wild, Responsibly

Travel is one of our greatest opportunities to get in touch with ourselves and the world around us. It allows us to discover new environments and ways of living, and at the same time, gain a fresh perspective on who we are and where we come from. But when done unconsciously, travel can also adversely affect environments and communities.

Unfortunately, the more spectacular an area, the more at-risk it tends to be. The in 2000, the Phi Phi islands have become overcrowded and polluted. And the Great Wall of China is crumbling in part from the sheer weight of visitors. All of this is not to discourage travel but to invite deeper awareness when we’re out in the world exploring. It’s a clarion call for more responsible and compassionate travel, or what is increasingly being known as “eco-tourism,” which, simply put, means exploring new terrain in a way that doesn’t harm our environment or society.
