Victoria Falls were so named by Livingstone in honour of the British queen he served. However, its real name was bestowed centuries before by the Kalolo-Lozi people: Mosioa-Tunya – ‘the smoke that thunders’, referring to the sprays of mist rising up to 800m in the air, which can be seen from 50km away, and the crashing of the water hitting the river below.
