“THE AUSTRALIAN CRICKET TEAM toured England in 1882 and unexpectedly demolished the English team, winning 13 out of 16 matches played,” says Carolyn Fraser, lead curator of State Library Victoria in Melbourne, on the birth of an Aussie legend. “The English team played so badly that The Sporting Times printed a mock death notice for them, announcing that ‘The body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia.’
