Whether you are in a ‘dry’ climate or call the damp and soggy UK home, metal will undoubtedly rust at some stage. Nowhere is this more prevalent than VW floorpans. The moisture collects, either from rainwater working its way into the car through leaking window seals and sunroofs or from condensation build-up, which settles at the lowest point. Either way, moisture being trapped under carpets or rubber mats with nowhere to escape is bad news.
In the case of our project ‘68 sunroof Beetle, the sunroof leaks became a torrent one winter, leading us to literally bail the car out and find some dry storage. I guess that’s the price you pay for the additional cool factor of a sunroof or convertible Beetle. So if your car is in a similar state, or you haven’t checked, you would be wise to roll up your sleeves, some gloves prepare get messy.
