A bicultural nation, Aotearoa New Zealand is home to active art scenes made up of residents with diverse Pacific, Asian, and European heritages. Most arts funding comes from the national arts council, Creative New Zealand, which in 2019 distributed NZD 25.8 million (USD 16.8 million) for visual-arts-related projects, organizations, publications, research, and travel.

Located in New Zealand’s largest city, the is the country’s primary art institution. Highlights for the year included two solo exhibitions of 20th century modernist painters: “Frances Hodgkins: European Journeys” (5/4–9/1); and “From Life” (11/2–⅜/20), the first survey of French-born abstractionist Louise Henderson, jointly developed with Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū. Also, “Living Portraits: Mata Raurangi” (3/16–⅜/20) showed contemporary artists with connections to colonial portraits of Māori ancestors. Australian-born Kirsten Paisley, previously at the National Gallery of Australia (NGA), was appointed the new director.
