In Michelle Obama’s speech to almost 4000 graduates at The City College of New York’s commencement ceremony in June 2016 – her last commencement speech as First Lady of the United States – she spoke about overcoming adversity to fulfil your dreams. “You should never view your challenges as a disadvantage,” she told the audience. “Instead, it’s important for you to understand that your experience facing and overcoming adversity is actually one of your biggest advantages.” She urged them to believe they would have the stamina to conquer life’s obstacles.
Two Kiwi female entrepreneurs, who have created successful home-based businesses on the back of adversity, are prime examples of how our hardest times often lead to our greatest moments.

A solo parent living on a carer’s benefit while raising three kids – including one with highly special needs – Jude Mitchell never expected that a booming baking business would take off from the comfort of her own kitchen. Today however, she’s the proud owner of Blenheim-based cakery Marlborough Mud Cakes – baking up to nine cakes a day and sometimes staying up until 2am
