Don’t Write-Off The .22 Magnum
TOWARDS the end of 1959, Winchester took a long hard look at their old .22 WRF and decided that it could be modernised. They lengthened the case, loaded it with a 40gn bullet and jacked the velocity up to 2000 fps, believing it would interest of of American small-game hunters.
The .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire (.22 WMR) proved to be a lot more effective than the .22 Long Rifle and was greatly appreciated by hunters who found it extremely deadly on small game. Interestingly, Winchester did not have a rifle chambered at the time it was introduced. Other riflemakers jumped on the bandwagon and introduced autoloaders, bolt-, slide and lever-actions for it. Eventually, Winchester caught up and offered a pump and lever-action of their own.
