Gambling On The Government

MY WELL-THUMBED dictionary informs that the word ‘Gamble’ means taking a risk in the hope of a desired result. Given that definition, the risk on this weekend’s excursion was my choice of a Browning badged 1886 Winchester chambered in 45/70 Government; my desired result, to humanely harvest a mature chital or feral pig.

Having successfully used smaller old-time cartridges on these species, I was confident that this rifle/cartridge combination would prove suitable at realistic ranges. My only niggling doubt sprang from the application of a commercial hard cast 405 grain lead projectile, travelling at a pedestrian 1100 feet per second.
