AUSTRALASIA'S TOP EMERGING PHOTOGRAPHERS

PROUDLY SPONSORED BY FUJIFILM

THE BEST EMERGING TALENT

This year marks the 11th year that Capture magazine has run these awards, designed to showcase the very best emerging photographic talent across Australia and New Zealand. The awards recognise talented photographers, be they in the early stages of their photographic careers or simply working towards being the very best photographers they can be. Popularity of the competition continues unabated, and in 2019, total entries across the nine categories grew by 26%. Categories attracting the highest proportion of entries were Landscape and Portrait, while the Travel category showed the most significant year-on-year increase.

HOW THE COMPETITION WORKS

To be a contender for the title of Australasia’s Top Emerging Photographer 2019, photographers with less than four years’ full-time experience working as a professional photographer were invited to submit portfolios of six images across any of the nine categories. Students of photography and those with no professional experience were also eligible to enter. After an initial review of entries by the editor of Capture, a shortlist was produced.

A judging panel of 31 experts in the world of photography lent their expertise across a number of categories to vote, indicating their top five favourite portfolios. From the category winners, judges were then asked to rank their three favourite portfolios to determine the overall winner – Australasia’s Top Emerging Photographer 2019.

RECOGNITION

Along with winners and runners-up, we also name the top ranked portfolios (Top 10 and Top 20) for each category. As photographers were able to enter the same category with more than one portfolio, their rankings are reflected on the lists according to how their portfolio was judged.

This year, a number of past judges commented on the increasing quality of the work submitted. Huge thanks and gratitude to the leading
