WINNING LETTER

A BILLION OF THE BEST TREES

What Helmut Janssen says about loss of soil carbon under pine trees we can vouch for (‘A billion of the best trees’, ONZ Jan/Feb 2019). We’ve just logged 7 ha and the pumice soils are completely bleached under the litter layer. Adjoining pasture still black for 250–300 mm and dark throughout the subsoil, as was this block when planted. Further we are not convinced that the percentage of carbon actually removed in logs is accurate, as a heck of a lot is still left on site to slow burn back to CO2.
