Riding the dragon

Brendan Hoare spins a great yarn about being asked by the World Rural Forum in 2011 to support an application they were making to the United Nations. They wanted the UN to designate 2014 the Year of Family Farming, and called for global regions to back them up. Brendan was their only Oceania contact so they asked him to contribute.

“I wrote a letter saying, ‘On behalf of Oceania, go for it! And I support it!’” he says. “And it happened.” Brendan helped organise 12 months of festivities here at home, including a shindig at Parliament and an historical documentary.

Not everyone was wild about Oceania’s unelected spokesperson assuming the role, however. Some protested. His response was typically Brendan.
