CHILLING OUT

In 2004 we moved onto a bare rural block, determined to demonstrate an energy-efficient lifestyle and enjoy the cost savings it represents. Initial power? One 50W solar panel. Not only did we want to run lights and a stereo on that, but we wanted a fridge as well.

I started with the premise that a top-loading fridge is best; front-loaders lose all that chilled air the moment that you open the door (which I count as already-expended energy; it might as well be dollar notes pouring away across the floor).
