As a child enjoying family holidays at the coast, I remember very clearly the moments I hated most of any day spent on the beach: when my mother would summon me for the periodic reapplication of sunscreen. Pretending I didn’t hear the summons wouldn’t do – it was a job she took very seriously. A
This particular sunscreen was a thick and sometimes sticky white formula that would be smeared over my face, shoulders, neck, and then down, all the way to my legs and feet. Mom won no popularity contests for it, but she couldn’t care less. My sisters and I would obediently apply sunscreen or suffer the consequences.
