Change at Top for NZR
New Zealand Rugby has begun the search for a new chief executive after long-term incumbent Steve Tew announced he will be stepping down later this year.
Tew, who had a long spell as deputy, before assuming the top job in December 2007, says that he felt the time was right for a change, paving the way for a new appointment to be installed after the World Cup.
Most commentators would agree that Tew delivered outstanding results during his tenure, leading NZR to unprecedented revenues and on-field success.
The All Blacks won two World Cups on his watch–and it could become three–while all the other national sides were also world champions and the Black Ferns Sevens won an Olympic silver medal in 2016.
“There are new and exciting changes coming as a result of the upcoming, new international calendar; a changing broadcast environment; as well as a new All Blacks head coach to be appointed so it’s the right time for me,” said Tew.
But with All Blacks head coach Steve Hansen also standing down and captain Kieran Read leaving, New Zealand faces the daunting prospect of having to replace its three most senior figures at the same time.
