The Layback Snap
Want to mix up how you approach the end section? Add a bit of variety to your repertoire by getting this turn dialled in… perfect the layback snap and impress like John John Florence at Bells.
You never really know how a layback snap will turn out. You might blow your tail out the back of the wave and fall immediately, or you could do one of those one-footed hanging-on recovery things that are so cool to watch and even more cool to pull off. You just have to roll with it and trust your instincts.
THE SIZING UP
You need to appraise the section ahead, and make little calculations as to what sort of layback snap you’re going to attempt, and how much power you’re going to put into it. Either way, you need to approach the section with plenty of speed. You can either do laybacks on those nice and steep sections, or on closeouts that aren’t bowling too much, à la John John at the Bells’ end section. You probably want about as much speed to burn as if you were thinking of going into the air, a smaller fins-free kind of air, as opposed to a massive alley-oop, that is,
