MIXTAPES GO MODERN
Long ago, in the 1980s, there were mixtapes. This was also the time of footless tights and leg warmers, discotheques, Jane Fonda’s exercise videos, which made the phrase ‘feel the burn’ popular, shoulder pads and American soapies like Dallas and Dynasty.
It was the time of my youth too. Today the music that we danced to at house parties and listened to on road trips still plays in my head. Sometimes the music tapes were ‘love letters in sound’ that romantic boyfriends made for girls (or the other way around).
Mixtapes–the playlists on music cassettes–are with us again. In the hit TV series The Handmaid’s Tale, which is based on Canadian Margaret Atwood’s book of the same name, a box of them appears in the cellar, with nostalgic memories of the then romantic man who compiled them for his beloved.
