The Shape of the Ruins

Juan Gabriel Vásquez, translated by Anne McLean (Hachette, $38)

Don’t be put off by the fact this work of “metafiction” draws attention to its own artifice, because it’s very good indeed – and not a difficult read. The author and the narrator are both Colombians called Juan Gabriel Vásquez: both previously wrote a novel called , both spent years in Europe before returning to Colombia, and both are was shortlisted for the 2019 Man Booker International Prize, for works translated into English.
