ANCIENT NEW ZEALAND: SQUAWKZILLA AND THE GIANTS

From 13 December

onster penguins used to swim around the ancient subcontinent of Zealandia more than 60 million years ago; 40 million years after that, crocodiles, turtles and the world’s largest parrot, nicknamed Squawkzilla, lived in subtropical forest while Central Otago lay submerged beneath a giant lake. Luckily for us, those crocs haven’t stuck around, and parrots now features life-sized models of these weird creatures of New Zealand’s past, with a focus on how scientists are using fossils to uncover our land’s ancient secrets.
