If you were to ask any runner what the two most important metrics in regards to racing or training were, most of them would answer time and distance, right?
When it comes to trail running, I would argue that they are, in fact, time and intensity. If we were to focus on time and distance, a week spent running 100 kilometres on trails in muddy forest is going to be very different from a week spent running 100 kilometres in the mountains, which again would be different from a week spent running 100 kilometres on flat, manicured, well-drained soil.
