SUPER HERO RECOVERY

This May I had run the Rotorua Marathon in a personal PB for the course of two hours 49 minutes, then purposefully gave myself a short two-week turn around to run the Hawke’s Bay half marathon - I didn’t just want to go and run for the winery lunch (although Craggy Range did a fantastic vegan set menu).

I wanted to have some fun racing at the end of the distance, so needed recovery techniques to give me the best chance to perform.

A couple of my trusted friends (one a fantastic coach at high performance level, the other an orthopaedic surgeon with past experience as a semi-professional triathlete) stated: “It doesn’t matter what type of athlete you are - you will be carrying muscle damage at two weeks post marathon.” Even for the most efficient runner it takes four-to-six weeks to recover from a road marathon. An inefficient runner will take longer.
