THE end of 2019 marks the close of the first 20 years of the new millennium – and what an eventful two decades it’s been. To mark this milestone, we look back at 20 standout moments in a world that’s often steeped in horror and cloaked in darkness but also lit by wonder, achievement and joy.
FALLEN HERO
On 7 April 2000 police in Delhi, India, accused Proteas captain Hansie Cronjé and his team of match-fixing during the one-day international (ODI) series in the country the previous month.
For four days Cronjé denied the charges – but then he called Ali Bacher, managing director of the United Cricket Board of South Africa.
“Ali, I haven’t been completely honest with you,” he said.
He also sent a fax to Ray McCauley, head of the Rhema Church, in which he used the now-infamous words, “The devil made me do it.”
Cronjé went on to testify before the King Commission, making one shocking revelation after another, including that he’d offered bribes to teammates and accepted hundreds of thousands of rands and expensive gifts from bookies.
In October 2000 he was banned from professional cricket for life. Two years later he died aged 32 when the light aircraft in which he was travelling crashed in poor weather in the Outeniqua Mountains near George in the Western Cape.
