‘Our bags combat plastic waste’

JADE DU TOIT, 33, lives in Claremont with her husband Jean, 38, and their two young children. She founded MyBaguse, which sells a range of bags made from recycled materials.

* THE IDEA My family and I adore spending time on the beach, building sandcastles and soaking up the warmth of the sun. The quiet, sun-kissed shore of Jakkalsfontein is one of my favourite places – we often visit it during the holidays. On a break there in late 2018, I noticed all the rubbish scattered across the shoreline. Horrified, I ran back to our holiday home and grabbed loads of black bin bags so my family and I could pick up the litter. Most of it was plastic, which opened my eyes to the harsh reality of the plastic-waste crisis, even in small coastal areas.
