In early Wyoming many outlaws—of those who were caught, anyway—did time at the territorial prison, on the far bank of the Laramie River east of that eponymous town. Today visitors are eager to spend time behind bars at the “Big House Across the River,” which symbolized law and order in the region for three decades. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the imposing stone structure was built in 1872, operated as a federal prison until Wyoming’s admission to the Union
