earned fame from his shocking ability to catch a live wolf by hand. His unique skill led to a lasting friendship with President Theodore Roosevelt and a 1906 appointment as U.S. marshal for the Western District of Oklahoma. “Catch’em Alive Jack’s” talent even landed him a starring role in a 1908 silent was filmed by the Oklahoma Natural Mutoscene Co. at Roosevelt’s request, as some of his Eastern friends didn’t believe his stories about Jack’s peculiar talent. Roosevelt and Abernathy remained lifelong friends, the hunter repeatedly performing for the president and dining with him in Washington and New York.
