CHOICE!

There used to be two choices for mountain bikers hoping to race World Cup and crack a pro contract: be selected by Cycling NZ, the sport’s national body, or go it alone as a privateer.

In case you’re unfamiliar with the term, privateers are self-supported athletes who look after themselves on the competition circuit, which includes managing travel logistics, finding a place to sleep every night, keeping bikes race-ready, and coming up with the money to compete.
