TUNÐRA TRAILS

As the long Arctic winter retreats, the midnight sun casts warmth over an emerging mountain biking nirvana amid the deep fjords of northern Norway.

We visited the 50-mile-long Lyngenfjord and surrounding area, sailing north from the city of Tromsø into an area famed for winter ski touring and ice climbing. Purpose built mountain bike trails are few and far between, but a multitude of shared-use trails provide amazing riding if you’re prepared for a lot of hike-a-biking.

Having missed an opportunity to shoot some ski touring in the area over winter, I jumped at my second chance to head north of the Arctic Circle once the snow had retreated. This was to be one of those bucket list trips, sailing through the fjords, jumping off the boat to ride trails that lay beneath snow for most of the year!
