Born to Be Blue, a vignette that details a turning point in the life and career of musical natural Chet Baker, sketches a line between talent and the vices that threaten to compromise it. Writer/director Robert Budreau meanders through a period fraught with uncertainty for Baker, played with nuanced detachment by Ethan Hawke, when his prodigious entry into the territory of jazz’s elite was jarred off its course. Budreau offers a reflective glimpse along Baker’s road to recovery after an attack leaves him unable to play trumpet.
