THE Royal Armouries collections at the Tower of London hold one of the most unusual firearms shown at the Great Exhibition of 1851 – a steam-powered gun originally invented by the American engineer and inventor Jacob Perkins (1766-1849) in 1824. Perkins’ second son, Angier March Perkins (1799-1881), produced a later version of his father’s, this is an item of innovation.
