    We tend to know the outline story of the Battle of Trafalgar when, on 21 October 1805, off Cape Trafalgar on the south-west coast of Spain, the British fleet, commanded by Admiral Lord Nelson, beat – thrashed would be a better word, we sank 22 of theirs and they sank none of ours – the combined French and Spanish fleet and, in so doing, ensured that France would not be able to invade Great Britain.
