Art and fashion are two inexhaustible sources of inspiration that influence one another. Countless collaborations between artists and designers have shown that designers too are artists – just think of how many exhibitions and retrospectives the major museums are dedicating to them. Because sometimes a dress expresses the multitude of influences that in many collections converge in Art Brut, the work “created in solitude by pure, authentic creative impulses” and often made by the self-taught, the imprisoned and the mentally ill. Stylised motifs, ‘rough’ lines and graphics, ‘poor’ materials make up the surfaces like canvases, or combine with other patterns and decorative elements, to produce psychedelic collages. Still on-trend are the ’60s and ’70s, especially this year on the fiftieth anniversary of the street protests, and the ’80s are still going strong with punk and maximalism inspiring excesses in volumes, colours and iridescence. remains a key point since it is classic yet open to reinterpretation and eye-catching combinations, as when paired with underwear. Solid and structured, it expresses the new wave of feminism, born to defend women’s bodies.
