I just love early hammer guns before they settled down to the conventional Jones underlever or top-lever with Purdey bolt. The progression from muzzle-loader to breech-loader was anything but straightforward and during this development a great many blind alleys were pursued. These blind alleys, little quirks of development, were the result of gunmakers attempting to create perfect breech-loaders.
