s (Blu-ray and DVD 2 March, download out now) a horror? It feels more like a journey-intodarkness crime thriller. Elijah Wood (sporting a truly (streaming on MUBI until 20 March). Mashing up John Waters and Guy Maddin to the strains of oom-pah, this Austrian silent movie, shot entirely on Super 8 with a non-professional cast, features a middle-aged woman snogging her doppelganger, a procession of undead famous Austrians, and a trout-slapping fight. Metajokes and tongue-in-cheek intertitles prompt laughs, but it’s a ramshackle affair; it helps to pretend you’re watching something improvised over a weekend by some mates. (Blu-ray/DVD, out now) kicks off like , with a little girl kept locked inside by her father, who insists “bad people” will hurt her. Gradually we learn she’s one of the super-powered “abnormals” being hunted by the government… This low-budget indie can’t quite pull off the effects its blood-spattered final act requires, but it has a thoughtful “illegal aliens” subtext, and precocious young star Levy Kolker has a bright future ahead.
