FOOTNOTES

Chris’s project is an MSc study of the Cape Peninsula University of Technology and is being carried out in collaboration with the KZN Whale Time project that’s led by WildOceans (). The goal of the Whale Time project is to bring science, conservation, tourism and community together around humpback whales. A citizen science component invites citizens to take pictures of any humpback whale sightings and record them on to contribute towards an individual identification catalogue process that will help scientists better understand the migrations of the species. Another important component is the training of tour guides from disadvantaged communities to conduct tours at the Port Natal Maritime Museum in Durban to spread awareness about whales. This initiative is also geared at equipping the guides to secure permanent employment either as tour guides or in other sectors.
