Clay Target Calculus

Gillian Maistry steps to the line at the Wattlespring Sport Shooting Club near Bapsfontein, shoulders her double-barrelled, over-and-under Fabbrica Armi Isidoro Rizzini (FAIR) shotgun, and bellows the resounding command, “Pull›” A neon-orange clay target speeds onto the field and explodes in a puff of dusty, black smoke.

Alongside, shooting coach Sam Tshishonga whispers encouraging words. The gravitas of their union is lost on no one. Sam is the first black competitive clay-target shooter and coach in South Africa. Gillian is the first woman of Indian descent to represent South Africa in tournament-level clay-target sports.
