The span of work in NZ On Screen’s new Chinese in New Zealand collection tells a story in itself – one, a 1972 report featuring thoughtful interviews with, among others, Nancy Goddard and a young sociology student called Helene Knox (later Helene Wong). The reporter is future Penguin Books NZ boss Geoff Walker. It doesn’t steer away from talking about racism, but lets its subjects do most of the talking – which they do rather beautifully. But there’s much more here than that.
