AS THE 80s transitioned into the 90s, the most popular subgenres of heavy music appeared to be hair metal and thrash. And for the most part, it was all growing terribly predictable and stale – if you took a gander at MTV’s Headbangers Ball at the time, most of the bands looked and sounded the same (OK, OK… apart from the leading artists of each genre – especially Guns N’ Roses and Metallica, respectively). Just as punk rock took aim at prog and rock royalty in the 70s, the music world needed another movement to shake up the dreary state of rock in the early 90s. Thankfully, the back-to-basics grunge movement came to our rescue – and just in the nick of time.
In 1991, two bands based around Seattle were about to have their big breakthrough – Nirvana with and Pearl Jam with. A few months earlier, Alice In Chains had been given their own taste of success with their single, taken from their album , released the year prior. Finally, there was something out there making Seattle known for things other than Boeing and Starbucks.
