JOHAN Marais is the CEO of the African Snakebite Institute (ASI). He is the former curator of both FitzSimons’ Snake Park at Durban and Transvaal Snake Park in Halfway House, has served on the Crocodile Specialist Group of IUCN, was chairman of the Herpetological Association of Africa and of SARCA (Southern African Reptile Conservation Assessment) and is the author of dozens of books on snakes and reptiles. When not running the ASI, he is happiest looking for snakes and reptiles in Africa’s most remote nooks and crannies.
