He has been King-in-waiting since his birth in 1948 but the new decade has seen the Prince of Wales crowned the royal family’s hardest-working member.
At the age of 71, Prince Charles notched up an impressive 521 official engagements at home and abroad in 2019 and his hectic schedule looks set to continue as he takes on more responsibility from his mother the Queen.
And Her Majesty couldn’t have looked happier as she joined Charles and the next two generations of monarchs – the Duke of Cambridge, 37, and his six-year-old son Prince George – for an official photo.
Released to mark the start of the 2020s, the family portrait was taken in the Throne Room at Buckingham Palace before Christmas.
