ANNEMARIE WRITES: I waited at the Cubitje Quab waterhole in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park for a long time to get this photo. It was April 2019 and very dry. I hoped that a bateleur would come to drink…

Indeed, four bateleurs began circling the waterhole a couple of hours later: two adults and two  juveniles. They came in one by one and landed at the waterhole. This adult sat in the perfect position with the late afternoon sun illuminating it from the front. It drank undisturbed, occasionally lifting its head to look at the dragonflies at the water’s edge.

My settings: shutter speed 1/2 500 second; aperture f7.1; ISO 500.
