I drive slowly along Soutpan Road, adjacent to Soshanguve, easing my small car over speed bumps and manoeuvring through the township’s many stop streets. The sun has just come up; I left Joburg early to make sure I could get a good view of the crater in the clear morning light.
The road is called Soutpan for a reason. I’m approaching the Tswaing Meteorite Crater reserve, and Tswaing means “Place of Salt” in Setswana. About 220 000 years
