JEWEL OF THE RIVER
For as long as I can remember, one species of fish has dominated my mind, captivating my imagination and leaving me utterly confused more times than I can count. This fish is none other than the mighty mulloway. The mulloway, aka jewfish, is the undisputed "King of the river" throughout the southern half of Australia, and rightly so I say! They grow to impressive sizes, they look great, they eat a variety of baits and lures, and they can be found just about anywhere from the brackish reaches of estuaries all the way through to inshore reefs and headlands, and just about everywhere in between! All in all, they’ve got a lot going for them! For me though, I think it’s ultimately a combination of these factors as well as their challenging and mysterious nature that makes them the ultimate estuary target…
Whilst I do my fair share of "headland hopping" in pursuit of these fish, this article focuses on where my obsession began…. Flicking lures in the creeks and rivers close to urban areas. Despite being highly urbanised and heavily populated compared to many other mulloway havens, locations such as Sydney offers a surprisingly productive mulloway scene.
