Darwin's Lee Point natural and artificial reefs are an excellent fishery for Spanish mackerel. Located adjacent to the fertile estuaries of Shoal Bay and within a short distance from the Buffalo Creek or Nightcliff boat ramps these reef systems are easily accessible to small tinnies and trailer boats and it is not uncommon to see retired tourists from down south known colloquially as “grey nomads” pull in big mackerel from car toppers during the dry season.

While Spanish mackerel can be caught on a variety of methods including trolling and casting lures I have a growing family so fishing trips are organised to provide maximum bang for buck both in action and protein to feed my family so in this article I am going to share a few tips to an uncomplicated method that all but guarantees a feed of Spanish mackerel during the dry season.
