Come spring the silver-sided greater launce, or sandeel, “snakes” as we call them, begin to shoal over the high rock pinnacles that give purpose to the legendary Eddystone Lighthouse. Hard on the trail of these lunker sandeels comes the first wave of spring pollack, re-colonising these great reefs with fresh young fish as the sea temperature begins to climb, bringing new life to these savage high-rise rocks. Reefs such as the Hatt Rock, the Brendon’s, Hand Deeps and the magnificent Eddystone Reef itself are time honoured legends when it comes to sportfishing for these predatory young pollack.
These spring pollack are not the huge fish found on the offshore wrecks, but young, fresh fish, in superb condition, well fed, full of vim and vigour from predating on the great shoals
